Black life

The money bail system fuels mass incarceration and disproportionately impacts Black and low income communities. Black folks are often accused and jailed based on discriminatory and racially-biased policies and monitoring. Money bail often keeps our folks in cells because of their inability to pay.

When mothers languish in jail because of money bail, our families and communities suffer. Women and caregivers often lose their jobs, housing or even children only to be found innocent. Some, like Sandra Bland, have lost their lives. The cost to the children Black women and caregivers nurture, the partners they love and the communities they hold is incalculable.

Please donate to support Black Lives Matter Lansing Black Mamas Bail Out. We don't just bail Black Mama's out. We provide support and community connections to help Mamas with housing, food, clothing, personal care and other needs.

Our ultimate goal is to end money bail and transformative policy solutions that keep people out of cages. Until then, we will free every Black Mama we can, one at a time.

#FreeBlackMamas is a flagship campaign of the National Bail Out and we would not be able to do this without their generous support and resources.

Guiding Principles

Black Lives Matter Lansing is a small chapter—but what we lack in size, we make up for in influence. Since 2013, we have successfully centered the issues of Black folks in Metro Lansing in the hearts and minds of neighbors, elected officials, and institutional leaders. BLM Lansing has oriented over 900 people to the BLM framework not just in Lansing, but also across the state through our workshops at the National Association of Social Work Michigan Legislative Education and Advocacy Day. BLM Lansing is in the midst of co-launching a political education campaign, Election 20XX, to inspire leadership in young Black people under age 30 “from the Block Club to the White House.”
